About JLH
Built on Trust. Driven by Results
Founded in 2014, JLH Excavations has grown into a trusted name in Tasmania, specialising in bulk earthmoving, detailed and final trim excavation, quarrying, heavy haulage, cartage, and landscape supplies. Our commitment to quality, safety, and community engagement drives every project we undertake.
2014 - Our Humble Beginings
JLH Excavation & Cartage was founded in 2014 by Jakeb Hampton, with a clear vision — to build a business based on hard work, reliability, and delivering quality results for clients across Tasmania.
What started as a one-man operation, with Jakeb on the tools running a single tipper and excavator, quickly earned a reputation for getting the job done — no matter how big or small. With a strong work ethic and a focus on building long-term relationships, Jakeb steadily grew the business from those early days, expanding both the team and fleet to meet the growing demand for professional earthmoving and haulage services.
Today, JLH remains proudly Tasmanian-owned and operated, delivering the same hands-on service and commitment to quality that built the business from day one.
2015–2016 – Building a Reputation
Following its establishment in 2014, JLH Excavation & Cartage quickly gained traction across Northern Tasmania. By 2015–2016, word had spread about the company’s no-nonsense, reliable approach — built on founder Jakeb Hampton’s work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to customer satisfaction.
Operating as a one-man crew with just a single excavator and tipper, Jakeb focused on consistently delivering quality results for residential earthworks, farm works, drainage projects, and smaller civil jobs. Many of these early clients were secured through word-of-mouth, with the business earning repeat work thanks to its honest, on-time, and value-for-money service.
These years laid the groundwork for JLH’s reputation as a dependable contractor — a reputation that continues to underpin the business today. It was also during this period that Jakeb began to identify opportunities for growth, paving the way for expansion in the years to follow.
2017–2018 – Expansion of Services
By 2017, the steady stream of work built through reputation and referrals saw JLH Excavation & Cartage at a turning point. Demand was growing — not only for general earthmoving and excavation, but also for larger and more complex projects. Recognising the need to scale, founder Jakeb Hampton began investing in additional plant and equipment, expanding the company’s fleet and bringing on the first additional crew members to support the growing workload.
A key milestone during this period was JLH taking on the lease of the Union Bridge Quarry in Mole Creek — a strategic move that enabled the business to supply its own quarry materials, including high-quality base gravels and decorative rock. This diversification opened new avenues of work and allowed JLH to offer clients a more complete service, combining excavation and haulage with reliable supply of construction and landscaping materials.
Alongside the quarry operations, JLH broadened its services to include detailed excavation, larger-scale bulk earthmoving, and heavy haulage — delivering across Tasmania’s civil construction, agricultural and landscaping sectors.
These years marked JLH’s evolution from a small owner-operated business to a multi-faceted contractor with a strong reputation for delivering on complex projects — always backed by the same personal service and commitment to quality that had built the company from day one.
2019–2020 – Establishing a Strong Presence
By 2019, JLH Excavation & Cartage had firmly established itself as a trusted name across Northern Tasmania. With a growing team, an expanded fleet of modern plant and equipment, and a strong local network, the business was now regularly engaged on larger and more technically challenging civil construction, agricultural and infrastructure projects.
During this period, the business continued to strengthen its quarry operations at Union Bridge Quarry, increasing production capacity and broadening the range of materials supplied — including both high-demand construction gravels and premium decorative rock for landscaping clients. This allowed JLH to better service an expanding client base that now included local councils, major civil contractors, large-scale farms and private developers.
Investments were also made into additional heavy haulage equipment, which further enhanced JLH’s ability to manage complex logistics for bulk earthmoving, quarry supply and major cartage projects across Tasmania.
These years saw JLH take on more significant projects across multiple regions, and the company’s reputation for quality, reliability and professionalism continued to grow — laying a strong foundation for the next phase of expansion.
2021–2022 – Embracing Innovation
By 2021, JLH Excavation & Cartage had grown well beyond its early foundations, with a solid reputation for delivering quality outcomes on projects of all sizes across Tasmania. To keep pace with industry demand — and maintain the high standards clients had come to expect — the company focused heavily during this period on innovation and continuous improvement.
JLH made significant investments in upgrading its fleet with the latest earthmoving machinery, GPS-assisted equipment and advanced haulage solutions, allowing for even greater precision, efficiency and environmental performance on-site. The adoption of new systems and digital project management tools also helped streamline operations and improve project coordination — ensuring clients benefited from faster turnarounds and improved communication.
During these years, JLH also began attracting highly skilled operators, drivers and project personnel, building a talented team that could confidently tackle more complex civil, quarry and agricultural projects. The company’s flexible approach and focus on continual innovation allowed it to adapt quickly to new opportunities and shifting market demands — keeping JLH at the forefront of Tasmania’s earthmoving and haulage industry.
With a strong team, modern fleet and forward-thinking culture, JLH entered its next phase of growth well-positioned to deliver even greater value to its clients across the state.
2023–Present – Looking Ahead
In 2023, JLH Excavation & Cartage marked another major milestone with the acquisition of the lease for Highland Lakes Quarry in Golden Valley. This addition further expanded the company’s quarry operations — now producing a broader range of high-quality materials, including premium roadbase, decorative rock and specialised drainage rock.
The expansion into Highland Lakes Quarry has strengthened JLH’s position as a leading supplier of quarry products in Northern Tasmania, enabling the business to meet increasing demand from both long-term clients and new market sectors across the state. The ability to control material quality and supply has also enhanced the company’s ability to deliver end-to-end solutions for major infrastructure, civil and agricultural projects.
Today, JLH continues to grow its footprint across Tasmania and beyond, with an expanded fleet of modern equipment, an experienced team, and an unwavering commitment to safety, innovation and quality.
Looking ahead, the business remains focused on building long-term partnerships, diversifying services, and continuing to invest in people, plant and technology — ensuring JLH Excavation & Cartage is well-positioned to support Tasmania’s infrastructure and industry needs for years to come.
